From February 1, 2021, users of MTN MoMo will be required to present a valid national ID card for transactions at a MoMo agent point. Ghana Card, Driving License, passport, voter’s ID, SSNIT ID, NHIS are the valid Identification cards sanctioned to be used for transactions by MTN Ghana.

According to the telecom giant “when an agent is performing a cash-out for a subscriber, the agent is required to select the ID type and enter the ID number of the ID card the subscriber provides.”

This new update will also take effect on February 1, 2021. In January 2017, MTN Ghana launched a merchant payment service – MoMo Pay.This move was carried out to encourage the digitisation of merchant payments in Ghana’s open markets. This is also to stop the mobile money fraud happening cosistently all around us

This has brought about many reactions on Social media. As positive as this sounds ,some people seem to have a problem with it. According to them, Involving Identification cards in mobile money is going to be a lot of stress. Others were concerned about the details on their identification cards. Most numbers were registered by relatives who don’t live close by or by agents who they have no idea about their whereabouts.

However, many were pleased with this initiative, they have been cheated and robbed through mobile fraud. It’s about time MTN took some action. Some people were stuck in the middle, they didn’t know how this was going to end. ID card transactions in Ghana is somehow tiring and stressful.
