Housewives making headlines! Jen Shah was arrested on Tuesday, March 30, for her alleged role in a telemarketing scheme that defrauded hundreds of victims, many elderly and working-class, throughout the United States.

The TV star, 47, and her assistant Stuart Smith, 43, have been charged with conspiracy to commit fraud and money laundering, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York said. They were arrested and appeared in Salt Lake City federal court on Tuesday. It’s alleged they have been running a US-wide fraud scheme since 2012.

According to prosecutors, Ms Shah and Mr Smith sold services – such as website design – which claimed to make the management of victims’ businesses more efficient or profitable.

They’re also alleged to have offered to sell the personal information of potential victims to other members of the “fraud ring”. “Jennifer Shah, who portrays herself as a wealthy and successful businessperson on ‘reality’ television, and Stuart Smith, who is portrayed as Shah’s ‘first assistant,’ allegedly generated and sold ‘lead lists’ of innocent individuals for other members of their scheme to repeatedly scam,” Manhattan U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss alleged in a statement.

HSI Special Agent-in-Charge Peter C. Fitzhugh added that Shah and Smith flaunted their lavish lifestyle to the public, boasting success while actually gaining their riches at the “expense of vulnerable [people].”

Following the arrest, Variety confirmed that the Bravo series was filming at the time of the arrest while the cast prepared for a trip to Colorado.
